What Is a Good Bench Press? Honest Numbers by Bodyweight

Deadweight Strength News cover — What Is a Good Bench Press

A good bench press is your own bodyweight on the bar for reps. Push one plate a side at your weight, clean and full range, and you have cleared the line between "I lift" and "I bench a little." Anything past 1.5x bodyweight is strong. Anything under half your bodyweight means you just walked in.

The number on the bar is meaningless until you divide it by the person pushing it. 225 is a milestone for a 175-pound lifter and a warm-up for a 300-pound one. Here is where you actually stand — no ego, no arch that folds you in half.

What is the average bench press?

Most untrained men press about half their bodyweight the first time they lie down. Put a couple of honest years in and you land near bodyweight for a single. Your own weight on the bar puts you ahead of more than half the room. That is the whole game: not a magic number, a ratio.

What is a good bench press by bodyweight?

Strength is relative. These are raw, honest numbers — no bounce off the ribs, no half reps. Find your weight, then be honest about your reps.

Bodyweight (lb) Beginner Novice Intermediate Advanced Elite
130 65 95 130 165 230
150 75 115 150 190 265
170 85 130 170 215 300
190 95 145 190 240 335
210 105 160 210 265 370
230 115 175 230 290 405

Numbers are for a full-range raw single, rounded. Women generally run roughly 0.5 to 0.9x bodyweight across the same tiers.

What do the plate milestones actually mean?

The gym counts in plates, not pounds. Here is the ladder everyone is chasing:

  1. 135 — one plate. The first real handshake. Respectable for most beginners, light for a big lifter.
  2. 225 — two plates. The number that earns a nod. Solid intermediate strength for an average-sized man.
  3. 315 — three plates. Legitimately strong. Most lifters never touch it.
  4. 405 — four plates. Rare air. Years of work and good leverages.

How do you actually add to your bench?

You do not chase the max — you build the base that raises it. Bench more than once a week. Add small, five pounds at a time, and keep every rep full range. Own the bottom off your chest instead of bouncing it. Train your back and triceps like they matter, because they own your lockout. Sharp pain in the front of your shoulder is not toughness — back off and fix your setup or see a pro.

Strength is quiet. It shows up in what you can do, not what you say. Train like it — and wear something that does not quit either. The Barbell heavyweight tee is 240 GSM, cut to move under a loaded bar and hold its shape after it.

Stop counting reps for applause. Count them for the bar. Shop the heavyweight tees and dress like the work is the point.

FAQ

What is a good bench press for a beginner?

For an untrained man, roughly half your bodyweight is a normal starting point, and three-quarters of your bodyweight is a solid early goal. For women, about 0.3 to 0.5x bodyweight is a typical start.

Is a 225 bench press good?

Two plates is genuinely good for most lifters. For an average-sized man around 180 to 200 pounds it is roughly intermediate — stronger than most people who train, short of advanced.

How long does it take to bench your bodyweight?

With consistent training and real recovery, most men reach a bodyweight bench in one to three years. Lighter lifters usually get there faster because the ratio is kinder.
