What Is a Good Pull-Up? Honest Numbers for Men

Deadweight cover card: what is a good pull-up

A good pull-up number for a man is 8-10 strict reps from a dead hang; 12-15 is strong, and 20 or more is elite — and unlike a bench or squat, your bodyweight is the load, so the numbers below are already bodyweight-adjusted. If you're chasing a bigger back, pair this with a proper heavyweight tee that doesn't ride up over your lats when you hang.

Ignore the kipping, the half reps, and the chin-only-reaches-the-bar reps. The standards here assume a strict rep: dead hang at the bottom, chin clearly over the bar at the top, no swing. These are coaching benchmarks built from how lifters actually progress, not a lab study, so treat them as a map, not a verdict.

Pull-up standards for men: strict reps

Level Strict reps What it means
Beginner 1-4 Getting started. Build with negatives and band-assisted sets
Novice 5-7 Past the first wall. Most people who train regularly land here
Good 8-10 Solid. Above what most gym-goers can do
Strong 12-15 Back and grip are clearly trained
Elite 20+ Rare. Time to add weight, not more reps

Why bodyweight changes the math

A pull-up is a relative strength test. You're moving your entire body, so ten pounds of extra bodyweight is ten pounds you're lifting on every rep. That's why lighter lifters tend to crank out big numbers, and why a 250 lb lifter doing 8 strict reps is doing something genuinely hard. If you're bulking and your pull-ups drop, that's math, not weakness.

Back day deserves a shirt that holds up. The Barbell Heavyweight Tee is 240 GSM with a full barbell graphic across the back — built for the work. Limited runs; when a size is gone, it's gone.

Weighted pull-up standards

Once you have 10-12 clean reps, more reps stop being the fastest way to get stronger. Add weight with a dip belt or a plate in a backpack and work in the 3-6 rep range.

Level Added weight for 5 reps
Solid About 25% of bodyweight
Strong About 50% of bodyweight
Elite About 100% of bodyweight

Again, these are rules of thumb from coaching experience. Your form standard matters more than the exact percentage.

How to move up a level

Train pull-ups two or three times a week, stop a rep or two short of failure, and use several rep ranges instead of always grinding to failure. Add slow lowering reps, a heavier row on another day, and enough sleep. If you're stuck at 5, add a set of easy negatives after your work sets. If you're stuck at 10, start the belt.

Grip is often the quiet limiter. Dead hangs, thick-bar holds, and heavy carries help. Keep the shoulder blades down and back at the start of each rep, and drive your elbows toward your ribs rather than yanking with your arms.

Where pull-ups fit

Pull-ups sit next to your other benchmarks. If you haven't yet, check where you land on the bench press, squat, and deadlift standards. A lifter with a 405 deadlift and three pull-ups has a hole worth fixing.

Frequently asked questions

How many pull-ups is good for a man?

For most lifters, 8-10 strict pull-ups is a good number, 12-15 is strong, and 20+ is elite. Getting your first strict rep counts as a real milestone.

How many pull-ups should I be able to do?

A useful target is 8-10 strict reps from a dead hang, chin over the bar, with no kip. If you're at 5, aim for 8. If you're at 10, start adding weight.

Is 10 pull-ups good?

Yes. Ten strict pull-ups puts you well above the average gym-goer and is a solid base to start weighted work.

What is a good weighted pull-up?

Adding around a quarter of bodyweight for 5 reps is solid, half of bodyweight is strong, and a full bodyweight added is elite. These are coaching rules of thumb, not lab standards.

Does bodyweight affect pull-up numbers?

Yes. Pull-ups are relative strength, so every extra pound you carry makes each rep harder. A lean 180 lb man and a 260 lb man aren't measured the same way.
