What Is a Good Push-Up Number? Honest Standards by Age
For a man in his 20s or 30s, roughly 30 strict push-ups is a solid number, 40+ is good, and 50+ is excellent; the standard drops with age and is lower for women. Those are approximations of commonly cited fitness-test norms, and they only count if every rep is full range — chest to a fist off the floor, body in a straight line. Do the reps in a heavy 240 GSM tee that doesn't ride up and you'll see exactly where you stand.
Push-up numbers online are inflated because most people count half-reps. Here is what honest standards look like, how to test yourself, and how to move up.
Push-up standards by age (men)
These ranges follow commonly cited push-up fitness-test norms and are approximate — treat them as a benchmark, not a diagnosis.
| Age | Average | Good | Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 20-34 | 35-49 | 50+ |
| 30-39 | 15-29 | 30-44 | 45+ |
| 40-49 | 10-24 | 25-39 | 40+ |
| 50-59 | 8-19 | 20-34 | 35+ |
| 60+ | 5-14 | 15-29 | 30+ |
For women, the same ladder applies at roughly half to two-thirds of the numbers when done from the toes; many test protocols allow knee push-ups, which are a different standard. Pick one style and stay with it.
What counts as a rep
Hands about shoulder width, body rigid from head to heel, chest lowers to a fist's height from the floor (or touches), elbows lock out at the top. No sagging hips, no head-bob, no pumping the last inches. If your chest doesn't travel, it's not a rep. Count strict reps and your number will probably drop by a third, which is the number that means something.
Train in something that stays put. A 240 GSM tee doesn't ride up or cling under a max-rep set. The Barbell Heavyweight Tee is built for exactly that. Limited runs — if your size is up, take it.
How to test yourself
Warm up, then do one set to true failure — the last rep you can do with strict form. Rest at least 48 hours from a hard upper-body session first. Write the number down and re-test every four weeks. One set to failure is the standard test; do not chain sets and call it a total.
How to add push-ups
Grease the groove. Do several submaximal sets across the day (about half your max) three to five days a week. Volume with low fatigue builds the movement pattern fast.
Add reps weekly. Do 4-5 sets at 2 reps shy of failure, resting 90 seconds, and add a rep or two per set each week. When you hit 4 sets of your old max, retest.
Get stronger at the bench. Push-ups are a light-load, high-rep chest, shoulder and triceps exercise. A stronger press carries over; see what a good bench press looks like by bodyweight, and compare it with a good pull-up to check your pressing-to-pulling balance.
Push-ups vs bench press: which matters
Push-ups are a real strength test at higher reps, but they cap out: once you can do 40+, you are training endurance more than strength. To keep building strength, load the movement (weighted vest, feet elevated, slower tempo) or press with a barbell. Both can coexist — push-ups make a good finisher after heavy pressing.
Frequently asked questions
How many push-ups is good for a man?
For a man in his 20s or 30s, about 30-40 strict push-ups is good and 50 or more is excellent. The standard drops with age.
How many push-ups should I be able to do?
A healthy adult man should aim for at least 20-30 full-range reps in a row, and a woman 10-20 from the toes. Anything more than that is above average.
Is 100 push-ups in a row impressive?
Yes. It is far above the excellent range and means you have very high muscular endurance, as long as each rep is full range with a straight body.
How do I increase my push-ups fast?
Do several sub-maximal sets spread across the day, add a rep or two each week, and get stronger at pressing movements like the bench press. Retest every four weeks.
Do push-ups build muscle?
Yes, especially if you are new to training or use high-tension variations like feet-elevated or weighted push-ups. For continued growth, add load once bodyweight reps get easy.
Count strict reps. Wear something built for it. Shop the Barbell Heavyweight Tee or browse the full heavyweight tee collection. Runs are limited and don't restock on a set schedule — if your size is up, that's the window.
