Totalitar are back with their first album in twenty years. The self-titled LP lands August 28 via De:Nihil Records in Europe and Prank Records in North America — their first full-length since 2006's Vi Är Eliten. Lead single Vad är det ni vill ha? is out now.

Who are Totalitar?

They formed in Hudiksvall, Sweden in 1985 and are the reason a huge share of modern hardcore sounds the way it does. Speed, no ornamentation, politically charged lyrics delivered like a threat. If you have heard a d-beat band in the last thirty years, you have heard their fingerprints — they helped define the template that generations of hardcore punk bands have been running since.

Why does a 20-year gap matter?

Because most bands that disappear for two decades come back for the money, not the record. Totalitar came back with a record. Forty-one years after forming, they are releasing new material on the same kind of independent labels they always used — not a legacy imprint, not a festival-circuit victory lap. That is a choice, and it is the correct one.

They are also playing a hometown-spirited release show on September 26 in Malmö.
