How Long Should You Rest Between Sets?

The Work cover graphic: Rest Longer, Lift More — Deadweight

Rest 2–3 minutes between sets of heavy compound lifts and 1–2 minutes on accessories. Rushing rest doesn't build more muscle — it just makes your next set worse.

Does resting longer build more muscle?

Research reviewed by Stronger by Science found more growth in lifters resting 3 minutes versus 1 minute, though results in trained lifters are mixed. The pattern is simple: rest enough to actually perform your next set.

What if I only rest a minute?

You can still grow — you'll likely just need more total sets to get the same result. Short rest isn't a shortcut. It's a trade.

The rules

  1. Squat, bench, deadlift, press: 2–3 minutes. Heavy compounds punish incomplete recovery.
  2. Accessories: 1–2 minutes. Enough, not luxurious.
  3. Under 60 seconds: fine for growth, but add sets to compensate.
  4. The test: if your rep count is collapsing set to set, you're resting too short.

Your phone timer isn't the enemy. Scrolling for six minutes between sets is. Set it, sit down, go again — that's the whole job. Wear the Varsity tee while you do it.

FAQ

Is 1 minute of rest enough to build muscle?

It can be, but you'll probably need more sets than someone resting 2–3 minutes for the same growth.

Does longer rest make you stronger?

For heavy strength work, yes — fuller recovery means heavier, cleaner sets, which is what drives strength.
