What Is a Heavyweight Hoodie? GSM, Fit and What to Buy

What is a heavyweight hoodie — Deadweight The Work card

A heavyweight hoodie is a hoodie cut from thick fleece, roughly 340–400+ GSM (grams per square meter), versus 180–280 GSM for lightweight ones. The weight is the point: it holds its shape, hangs straight instead of clinging, survives years of washing, and keeps you warm between sets without a jacket over it.

Most hoodies sold as "premium" are midweight at best. Here's how to tell the difference, how one should fit if you lift, and what to check before you pay for one.

What does GSM mean on a hoodie?

GSM is the weight of one square meter of the fabric, in grams. Higher GSM means denser, thicker cloth. It's the only number on a hoodie that tells you how heavy it really is, because "heavyweight" on a label is not regulated. Maker's Row defines GSM exactly that way and puts heavyweight hoodies at 350+ GSM.

Weight class Typical GSM What it feels like Best for
Lightweight 180–280 Thin, drapes and clings Layering, warm weather
Midweight 280–340 Standard retail hoodie Everyday wear
Heavyweight 340–400+ Dense, structured, holds its shape Cold gyms, the walk to the car, years of wear

Ranges vary by source by about 20 GSM. Melbourne Merch's fabric guide starts heavyweight at 340 and runs it to 400+.

Heavyweight vs regular hoodie: what's actually different?

A regular hoodie is usually 280–320 GSM; a heavyweight one is 340 and up. That extra weight changes four things you'll notice in the first week:

  • Shape. Thick fleece stands off the body. It doesn't cling to a pump or show every fold of the tee under it.
  • Warmth. Brushed fleece traps heat. A heavy one replaces a jacket for a cold garage gym or a 6 a.m. walk in.
  • Durability. Denser knit pills less and keeps its hood and cuffs from going limp after a few washes.
  • Weight on the body. You'll feel it. That's the trade: it's not a hoodie for a hot day.

Fleece vs French terry: which is heavier?

Fleece is brushed on the inside, fuzzy, and traps heat. French terry is looped and unbrushed, lighter and more breathable. Most true heavyweights are brushed or loopback fleece. If a "heavyweight" hoodie has a flat, looped inside and feels airy, it's probably terry at a lower weight. Terry isn't worse. It's a different job.

How should a hoodie fit if you lift?

The shoulder seam should sit at your shoulder point or just past it, sleeves should end at the wrist bone, and the hem should land at your belt line or slightly below. Lifters need room in the chest and lats so the hood doesn't pull back when you reach forward.

Check Good fit Too small
Shoulders Seam at or past the shoulder point Seam sits up on the deltoid
Chest / lats Room to cross your arms without strain Pulls across the back when you reach
Sleeves End at the wrist bone, cuff holds Ride up past the wrist on a press
Hem At or just below the belt line Rides up when you bend over

Is a heavyweight hoodie worth it?

Yes, if you'll wear it more than one season. A heavy hoodie usually costs more up front, but the denser fabric keeps its shape and color through far more washes than a thin one, so the cost per wear drops. The same math applies to tees: see are heavyweight t-shirts worth it. If you only need something for an hour on a cool morning, a midweight does the job.

How do you wash a heavyweight hoodie so it lasts?

Wash cold, inside out, and tumble dry low or hang it. Never iron over the print. Heat is what shrinks cotton fleece and cracks graphics. It's the same reason graphic tee prints crack and peel. Turn it inside out and the face of the fleece and the print stay protected from the drum.

What to wear for this

The Tyrant Heavyweight Hoodie is heavyweight fleece in darkwood camo with a full back print, sizes S–2XL, standard hoodie fit. Thick enough to hold its shape over a tee between sets and on the cold walk out. Wear it over a heavyweight oversized tee and the layers hang the same way. FAQ

What GSM is a heavyweight hoodie?

About 340–400+ GSM. Below roughly 340, it's midweight, whatever the label says.

Do heavyweight hoodies shrink?

Cotton fleece can shrink with heat. Wash cold and dry low or hang-dry to keep the size you bought.

Should I size up in a heavyweight hoodie?

Only if you want an oversized hang. For a standard fit, order your normal size. Heavy fabric doesn't stretch out the way thin hoodies do.

Are heavyweight hoodies too hot for the gym?

For working sets in a warm gym, usually yes. They're built for cold gyms, warm-ups, and between sets. Take it off when the work starts.

What's the difference between fleece and French terry?

Fleece is brushed and fuzzy inside and traps heat; French terry is looped, unbrushed, lighter and more breathable.
