What Makes a Good Heavyweight Gym T-Shirt
A good heavyweight gym t-shirt comes down to four things: fabric weight (aim for 220–260 GSM), 100% cotton or a cotton-heavy blend, a print bonded into the fabric instead of sitting on top, and a cut that holds its shape after washing. Miss any one of those and you've got a tee that goes transparent under gym lights and stretches out by the third session.
Fabric weight is the whole game
GSM — grams per square meter — is the number that separates a tee that lasts from a rag. Fast-fashion gym tees run 150–180 GSM: thin, see-through, and shapeless fast. Heavyweight sits at 220–260 GSM: opaque, structured, and heavy enough to hold its cut through training and a wash cycle. Our heavyweight tees sit at 240 GSM — top of standard heavyweight, structured but still trainable.
Cotton over blends for training
Poly-heavy blends hold odor and feel slick. 100% ring-spun cotton breathes, wears in, and takes a print better. The tradeoff is a little shrinkage — which is why a good heavyweight is cut with that in mind.
The print has to be bonded, not stuck on
Screen prints crack and peel. A DTF (direct-to-film) print bonds into the cotton and stays flexible, so the graphic holds through repeated washing instead of flaking off. If a tee's print feels like a plastic panel, it'll crack.
Fit that survives the wash
Reinforced seams, a true-to-size cut, and enough body that an oversized shape reads intentional instead of sloppy. If you want the drop-shoulder look, take your normal size; size down for something closer to the body.
Cut what weakens you. If a tee can't survive a gym bag, it's not built for the work. Browse the Heavyweight Graphic Tees — every one is 240 GSM, DTF-printed, and cut to hold up. Not sure on weight? Read 240 GSM vs 180 GSM.
FAQ
What GSM is best for a gym t-shirt?
220–260 GSM. That's heavy enough to stay opaque and hold its shape, without crossing into the stiff 300+ GSM range that traps heat and fights you when you move.
Do heavyweight tees run hot?
At 240 GSM, no more than a normal cotton tee — they're structured, not insulated. The 300+ GSM "ultra-heavy" slabs are the ones that run hot.
Will a heavyweight tee shrink?
100% cotton shrinks slightly on first wash. Wash cold, tumble low, and it settles. A well-cut heavyweight accounts for it.
