What Is a Good Dumbbell Bench Press? Honest Numbers

Deadweight cover card: What Is a Good Dumbbell Bench Press

A good dumbbell bench press is a pair of dumbbells each weighing about 40 percent of your bodyweight for clean reps. At 170 pounds, that is roughly 70s for a set of five to eight; 50s is solid novice, 85s is advanced. Per-hand numbers always look small next to a barbell, so judge them against your bodyweight, not the plates.

Strength training gets easier to sustain when your shirt is not the thing fighting back. If you press heavy, wear something that clears the shoulder and holds up; the Barbell Heavyweight Tee is 240 GSM and cut for it, and the rest of the heavyweight tee collection is built the same way.

Dumbbell bench press standards by bodyweight

These figures are per dumbbell, for a set of five to eight clean reps with a full stretch at the bottom. They are estimates derived from the barbell ratios on our good bench press page at roughly 40 percent per hand, rounded to the nearest five pounds. They are a guide, not a law.

Bodyweight (lb) Beginner Novice Intermediate Advanced Elite
130 25 40 50 65 90
150 30 45 60 75 105
170 35 50 70 85 120
190 40 60 75 95 135
210 40 65 85 105 150
230 45 70 90 115 160

Per-hand weight, men, rounded. Women generally run about 0.5 to 0.9x these numbers at the same bodyweight.

Dumbbell bench vs barbell bench: how the numbers convert

Two dumbbells always add up to less than the barbell you would use for the same effort. Each arm stabilizes its own weight, the path is free, and the bottom position is deeper. The rule that works: take each dumbbell at about 35 to 45 percent of your barbell bench. A 225 barbell bench lines up with dumbbells in the high 80s or low 90s. Bench 315 and you are in the 120s. If you have never touched the heavier dumbbells, start from a smaller percentage and move up as your shoulders get used to stabilizing.

What the milestone numbers mean

  1. 50s: A real marker for most men. If you press these for eight reps you are past the beginner stage.
  2. 70s: Solid intermediate for a man around 170 to 190 pounds. This is where gym regulars sit.
  3. 90s: Advanced. Few lifters ever press these for reps with a full range.
  4. 100s and up: Elite for most bodyweights. Getting them up is also a logistics problem; kicking them up is where shoulders get hurt.

How to raise your dumbbell bench

Add small jumps. Five pounds per hand is a ten pound jump in total load, which is large, so build reps first. Press in the eight to twelve range, and move up only when you hit the top of the range on every set. Set your shoulder blades back and down before every set. Lower the weight with control to a deep stretch, then drive up and slightly in. Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows. Pain at the front of the shoulder means the stretch is too deep for now or the load is too heavy; back off and see a professional if it persists. For the training side of rep ranges, see how many reps build muscle.

Dumbbells or barbell: which should you choose?

Use both. The barbell lets you load heavier and track progress in smaller steps. Dumbbells fix side-to-side differences, build stabilizers, and are kinder to the shoulder for many lifters. Many strong benchers run the barbell as the main lift and dumbbells as the second chest day. More standards: overhead press, squat, and deadlift.

FAQ

Is a 50 lb dumbbell bench press good?

For a man around 150 to 170 pounds, a pair of 50s for reps is a solid novice mark. For someone near 200 pounds it is still a beginner to novice weight. For most women it is advanced.

How much should I dumbbell bench compared to barbell?

Each dumbbell is usually about 35 to 45 percent of your barbell bench. If you bench 225, expect roughly 85 to 90 pound dumbbells for the same effort.

Is dumbbell bench harder than barbell bench?

Yes, per pound. Each arm has to stabilize its own weight, so total load is lower even though the effort feels similar. Most lifters press about 80 to 90 percent of their barbell total with two dumbbells combined.

Is a 100 lb dumbbell bench press good?

A pair of 100s for reps is advanced for most men and puts you well above the average gym lifter. At that level you are usually also benching about 250 to 275 on the barbell.
