What Is a Good Powerlifting Total? Honest Numbers by Bodyweight

Deadweight cover card: What Is a Good Powerlifting Total?

A good powerlifting total for a man is roughly 4x bodyweight (intermediate) and 5x or more (advanced); for a woman, about 3x and 4x, using squat + bench + deadlift in raw lifts. Hit 1,000 pounds and you are in the club most lifters chase, but whether that is good depends entirely on your bodyweight.

The numbers below are approximate benchmarks drawn from common strength-standard ranges, not federation rules. Train in something that holds up, like a Barbell Heavyweight Tee, and let the bar tell you where you stand.

What counts as a total

Your total is the sum of your best squat, bench press and deadlift, each a single rep. Raw means no wraps, suits or bench shirts; belts and knee sleeves are normally allowed. Equipped totals run far higher and are not comparable with the table above.

What each level really means

Beginner is where you land in your first months. Novice is a year of consistent training. Intermediate usually takes two to four years of serious work and is where most committed lifters plateau for a while. Advanced is the top slice of gym lifters and the entry point for competing locally. Elite is competitive national territory and takes years of programming, recovery and genetics on your side.

Breaking down the 1,000-pound total

A 1,000 lb total is a clean milestone. A typical split is something like a 400 lb squat, 250 lb bench and 350 lb deadlift, though it varies by build. For a 181 lb lifter it is about 5.5x bodyweight, which is advanced. For a 242 lb lifter it is about 4.1x, which is intermediate. Same number, very different achievement.

How to raise your total

Eat enough, sleep, and run a progression you can repeat for months. Your weakest lift tells you where the fastest gains sit: most lifters leave the most pounds on the table in the bench. Keep the technique boring, keep the reps low and add small plates. Related standards: a good bench press, a good squat and a good deadlift.

Bodyweight classes and why they matter

Strength per pound drops as bodyweight rises, which is why the multiples in the table shrink for heavier lifters. A 242 lb lifter needs far fewer bodyweight multiples than a 148 lb lifter to move the same total. If you are cutting or bulking, recalculate your ratio at each new bodyweight instead of chasing last month's number. Track your total every training block, not every session, and judge progress across months. Single-day numbers swing with sleep, food and stress.

The honest caveat

These are averages. Limb length, injury history and training age move the numbers. Use them as direction, not a verdict, and compare yourself to your last total before you compare yourself to anyone else.
